Relax before the Holidays!

Yes, we do tend to focus on food on Vendor Friday.  However, today will be focused around relaxation for the holidays. The Retreat Massage & Aesthetics is located just blocks from the King's Daughters Inn in Brightleaf Square. With the mission statement, "The Retreat is to nurture an environment of peace and harmony that facilitates each individual’s body, mind, and spirit", we think their spa services are  a gift for a family member or friend, a girl's day or even to get a massage for one hour to be alone and at peace. Or get an in-room massage at the Inn from one of their therapists.

The fabulous owner, Blake, got married at the Inn last year and we instantly fell in love with her spirit and her company. The therapists at The Retreat offer some amazing massage options including a deep tissue, reflexology and warm stone sessions. In addition to amazing massages (and, yes, we are bringing it back to food), the Retreat is offering "A Taste of Downtown Durham" treatments! Incorporating different ingredients from some of our favorite restaurants, the Retreat created specialty services including the Dos Perros' Classic Margarita Foot Exfoliation with Reflexology, Rue Cler's French Toast Facial, Fullsteam Beer Facial and many more here.

Four Square Fabulous!


Vendor Friday is brought to you by Four Square Restaurant this week!

Four Square rotates their fresh and local menu every two months and be sure that Colin & Deanna try to indulge in each and every new menu they offer. On Tuesday, they found a babysitter for the Inn (me) and traipsed over to Four Square to check out what chef had to offer. 

If you have never been to Four Square, you must try a cocktail. If you like Whiskey bar, Revolution or Geer St. Garden (which we all adore as well), Four Square goes head to head with any one of their classy cocktails. Colin ordered a Cognac Sazerac and Deanna got a St. Germain cocktail with Cardinal Gin (a N.C. born & bred gin). This set the tone to take a peak at the menu. Deanna does seem to get a bit overexcited when going to Four Square, so she had already selected her meal....Colin, however, is not quite as prepared. Their menu choices were as follows (with commentary. Please note Deanna is NOT a food writer):

Late Night at a Wedding....

Since I was not able to post for Vendor Friday (yes, weekends tend to get crazy here at the Inn), I have decided to roll both Weddings and Vendors into one this afternoon.

This past weekend we hosted the most darling couple, Jennifer & Gabe. They reserved the entire Inn for their wedding party & family to enjoy quality time together. On Saturday, they went off to Duke Chapel (make sure to check out Occupy Duke right in front) to exchange vows and danced the night away at the Cotton Room (no occupation right now and only a 5 minute drive from the Inn).

After the party wound down at the Cotton Room, the couple organized the Only Burger truck to roll up in front of the Inn for a late night snack. It was quite the hit! Having a late night snack for your guests after a night of dancing and fun is key. And what better way to show off Durham than to have one of our original food trucks! Not only is this a great wedding weekend idea, but Only Burger is the bees knees in terms of burgers and fries. Simply delicious.

Wine Wednesday!

While Wednesday is usually about a wedding we had the past weekend, we had Duke's Parents Weekend and there was a little break in the wedding world. Therefore, we have decided to focus on something just as important: WINE!

 The staff has narrowed down the (6) wines we will serve at our Wine & Cheese Tasting on November 13th from 3 - 5 PM. We wanted a subtle trend throughout the tasting so we settled on wines that will pair well with holiday meals.

We have come up with the following delicious list with a couple of tasting notes:

Mer Soleil Silver Unoaked Chardonnay:  Mineral driven nose with citrus shining through.
 
Fortediga Vermentino: Fresh, smooth mineral flavor, fine and persistent with pleasing aromas of pear and green apple notes.
Newton Claret: Spicy aromas of clove and cinnamon layered with dark fruit flavors of black cherry and blackberry supported by juniper and sage.

2 Hands, Gnarly Dudes Shiraz: Rich berries, plums, lavender and dark chocolate coupled with spice, subtle earth, char / ash and anise.

Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Country Pinot Noir: rich red fruit, earth, spice, floral notes, and citrus peel.

Chapoutier Banyuls Red (Aperitif Wine): powerful, balancing between black fruits and stewed fruits subtly brought by cocoa aromas.

Prodigal Farm will be bringing cheeses that pair well with each of the wines.  We can not wait to have some of their seasonal cheesecakes as well!
